Brazil has recorded only a small number of West Nile fever cases, and the disease remains rare in the country even as it spreads more widely around the world, according to CNN Brasil.
The report, published Wednesday, notes that global dissemination of the virus has increased, but Brazil has not seen a corresponding surge in human infections. Health authorities have confirmed four cases of the disease in the country, with recent suspected infections prompting further investigation, according to Folha de S.Paulo and G1.
One current case involves a 35-year-old woman in the state of Piauí, whom the Ministry of Health is investigating for possible West Nile fever, G1 reported. Other confirmed cases have been identified in the states of São Paulo and Santa Catarina, raising questions about whether the virus could trigger a larger outbreak in Brazil, according to InfoMoney.
